The situation

A generalist covers everything. A specialist decides what matters.

Smaller marketing teams are usually asked to be good at all of it: the website, the campaigns, the events, the newsletter, the launch nobody planned for. Breadth is not the problem — it is that nothing in that list ever gets the depth it needed to work.

A specialist is brought in for the part that is actually holding growth back, and is expected to be unusually good at that part. Sometimes it is the proposition. Sometimes it is a demand engine that generates enquiries but never conversations. Sometimes it is a channel that has been assumed to work for two years without anyone measuring it.

Epitomise is engaged that way: one defined piece of work, an agreed definition of what a good outcome looks like, and a written view at the end of what to do next.

What clients say

Three clients, in their own words.

Have worked with Epitomise for over six years and very happy with the level of service they provide. Our marketing campaigns are providing more enquiries than we can handle. Luckily, they are always available to help tailor the marketing to suit our budget and month to month requirements. Anton Van Der WattDirector · Digital AV · quoted in 2021
Steve is a pleasure to work with. His extensive knowledge of marketing, and specifically in our sector, is impressive, and his structured and inclusive style worked well in getting us all to focus on what really makes the difference. I’d recommend him to anyone who is looking for real strategic advice and guidance that comes with practical and clear deliverables. Cindy PhillipsHead of Marketing · OGL

Common questions

What bringing in a specialist actually involves.

How does an engagement start?

With a discovery call and a short piece of scoping. The output of that is a written brief: the problem, the outcome being aimed at, how it will be measured, and what falls outside the scope. Nothing begins until you have agreed that document.

Can we start small?

Yes, and most clients do. A smaller scope — a proposition, a single channel, one launch — is a sensible way to test whether the working relationship is right before widening it.

Does this replace our marketing team?

No. It works best alongside one. The specialist sets direction and raises the standard; your team keeps the relationships, the product knowledge and the day-to-day delivery that no external party can hold for you.

What if we do not have a marketing team at all?

Then the first outcome is usually a plan an owner can act on, plus the mentoring that makes a first marketing hire land well rather than expensively.

Sectors already well understood here include IT and managed services, electronics and engineering, business services, and a number of consumer-facing businesses.

Know the symptom but not the cause?

A short discovery call is usually enough to name it. No deck, no pitch.
